EV Connect Helps Plainsboro Township Earn Sustainable Jersey Certification

When Anthony Cancro became the Township Administrator for Plainsboro, NJ, he quickly started working toward civic environmental goals under the Sustainable Jersey program. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities that helps towns and cities reduce waste and cut greenhouse gases.

One of Sustainable Jersey’s top mandates is to improve fleet operations with conversion to electric vehicles. As towns in New Jersey improve their environmental footprint they are awarded Bronze, Silver, and Gold Star Certifications that help them acquire grant funding.

Goals

  1. Fulfill Sustainable Jersey environmental goals

  2. Transition the municipal fleet to electric vehicles where practical

  3. Install charging stations for the convenience of the Plainsboro citizens

Challenge

In order to acquire funding from New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, a township needs to be certified by Sustainable Jersey at one of its Bronze, Silver, or Gold Star designation levels. With many planned environmental initiatives to implement across Plainsboro, Mr. Cancro did not have the luxury of solving for only vehicle electrification.

Solution

Mr. Cancro met with New Jersey-based NRG Energy and asked for suggestions on electric vehicle service providers. He was introduced to EV Connect, which was able to facilitate a grant for Plainsboro from Electrify America. The grant covered 100% of the cost of EV charging stations, including installation.

Results

As a result of Mr. Cancro’s environmental initiatives, Plainsboro was awarded Bronze Certification. With the savings from Electrify America and the support of the state’s Sustainable Jersey program, Plainsboro Township was able to purchase its first electric vehicle this year.

“Sustainable Jersey is very excited that we’re creating a new path away from internal combustion engines and toward conversion to electric vehicles.”

—Anthony Cancro, Township Administrator for Plainsboro, NJ
