What is the Charge Ahead Colorado Program About?

In an effort to improve air quality and encourage the deployment of electric vehicles across the state of Colorado, the Colorado Energy Office (CEO) is offering grants for Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations through Charge Ahead Colorado. Since its inception in 2013, the Charge Ahead Colorado program has made awards for more than 1000 EV charging stations across the state.

** Please note: During this upcoming application round, Charge Ahead Colorado will be offering new incentives for high-powered L2 stations, and enhanced incentives for Income Qualified (IQ) projects and Disproportionately Impacted (DI) communities. Please refer to the Application Guide for in-depth program information, specific details on eligibility, and program processes.

  • CEO will fund 80% of the cost of a charging station up to the following set maximums:

    • Level 2, Fleet Only Charging Stations: $6,000

    • Level 2, Dual Port Stations (under 19kW): $9,000

    • Level 2, Dual Port Stations (Income Qualified): $11,500

    • Level 2, Dual Port Stations (19-25kW): $12,500

    • Level 3, DC Fast-Charging (DCFC) Stations (minimum 50kW+): $35,000

    • Level 3, Ultra-fast DC Fast-Charging (DCFC) Stations (minimum 100kW+): $50,000 (limited availability at the discretion of the awarding agency)

    *Applicants are eligible for up to 90% funding for both Income Qualified projects and Qualified Entities located in and serving Disproportionately Impacted (DI) communities.     • How the proposed project meets the objectives outlined in Section I Program Objectives

    • Benefits of the project to members of the public including current and future EV drivers

    • The level of project planning demonstrated and either internal expertise or the willingness to learn about developing an EV charging station plan.

    • Funding match dedicated to the project that exceeds the minimum 20% match , along with the extent to which one or more charging stations would not be installed but for the financial assistance provided by a grant from the fund.

    • The quality of the project including the rationale for placing the charging station at the selected location, the appropriateness of the level of charger (i.e. Level II or Level II also known as DC Fast Charging “DCFC”) to the expected usage of the charger, the number of vehicles and vehicle types that can be charged by each unit, and the extent to which the applicant’s charging locations are likely to effectively serve existing electric vehicles and encourage the acquisition of additional electric vehicles. Additional consideration will be given to whether the charging station is public or private, whether parking fees apply, and how the charging fees will be structured.

    • Ability to provide required reporting data for 5 years.

    • Plan for ongoing operation and maintenance is well thought‐out.

    • Applicant’s potential for, and commitment to, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

    • A well thought out, well written application

  • Eligible applicants include workplaces, multifamily properties, local governments, school districts, state/federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses that own multi-vehicle parking facilities that provide fleet, public, employee or guest/visitor parking.
