Charging Station Firmware
What is EV charger firmware?

Charger firmware (FW) is the built-in software created by the hardware manufacturer. It controls the charger’s core functions—such as power delivery, safety protocols, error handling and basic operation. Firmware ensures the charger works safely and reliably on a technical level.

What’s the difference between charger firmware and a CSMS?

Firmware runs inside each charger and manages its physical and safety functions. A CSMS operates at the network level, managing drivers, sessions, payments and operational control across many chargers. Both are essential, and together they create a complete charging experience.

Who is responsible for firmware updates?

Firmware is developed, maintained and updated by the charger’s hardware manufacturer. These updates ensure safe, reliable operation and compatibility with industry standards like OCPP.

Do I need both firmware and a CSMS?

Yes. Firmware makes each charger function safely. A CSMS manages the business of charging—ensuring a smooth experience for drivers and efficient operations for site owners.

How long does EV charging network migration take?

Most migrations are completed within 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the number and type of chargers, hardware compatibility and data transfer needs. EV Connect minimizes disruption by performing much of the work remotely and scheduling any on-site activity during off-peak hours.

Can I keep my existing EV charging hardware?

In many cases, yes—especially if your chargers are OCPP-compliant and on supported firmware. We assess hardware compatibility up front and recommend whether to reuse your chargers as-is, update firmware and configuration or replace them if necessary.

What kind of downtime should I expect during EV charger migration?

Most drivers won’t notice any disruption. We schedule migrations during off-peak hours, perform remote updates whenever possible, and send technicians onsite only when needed. Each batch of chargers typically takes about 15 minutes to migrate, minimizing overall downtime.

Can you migrate my driver accounts and charging history?

It depends on what your current provider makes available. Where data export is possible, we’ll work with you to bring over key elements such as user accounts, tariffs and usage history. If data access is restricted, we’ll help you design a clear transition plan so drivers and site hosts understand the change.

Does EV Connect only support migrations when a provider shuts down?

No. While we certainly help customers when a CSMS or network is being sunsetted, many organizations choose to migrate proactively—for reasons including higher uptime, more robust features, better support or greater long-term flexibility. We’re happy to help in either scenario.

What types of customers does EV Connect support for migration?

EV Drivers

General
Where can I find reliable charging stations in my area?

Reliable charging stations can be found using apps like EV Connect or the U.S. Department of Energy’s locator, which filter by uptime, reviews, and access type for real-time availability in your specified location. EV Connect manages over 3,500 stations with advanced EV charging software for high reliability, including performance data and maintenance tools to ensure consistent operation.

How do I use an EV charging app to locate fast chargers?

Open an app like EV Connect, enable location services to view nearby stations on the map, then apply filters for fast chargers (e.g., DC fast or Level 3) to check availability, speed, and start charging via tap-to-charge features. EV Connect’s app enhances this with real-time monitoring and integration into EV charging station management systems for reliable, high-speed session initiation.

What are the best apps to find electric vehicle charging stations nearby?

Top apps include, EV Connect’s app which offers seamless station location and 24/7 support for enhanced user experience, and PlugShare for its comprehensive map and user reviews covering over 100,000 stations worldwide., Other reliable options like Electrify America and FLO provide route planning and nearby charger filters to optimize EV charging software usage.

Which app is most reliable for all types of electric vehicles?

EV Connect’s app stands out for its robust software platform, offering 24/7 support and seamless integration with diverse EV charging solutions across vehicle models.

What should I consider when choosing a charge point operator for my EV?

When choosing a charge point operator, look for reliable station uptime, convenient locations, transparent pricing and a driver-friendly app experience. EV Connect offers dependable charging, easy station access and 24/7 support to keep you moving.

What is Level 2 charging?

Level 2 charging uses a 240-volt power source—the same as many household appliances—and provides 20–30 miles of range per hour of charging. It’s the most common type of charger found at workplaces, retail centers and multi-unit dwellings.

What is Level 3 charging?

Level 3, or DC Fast Charging (DCFC), uses direct current power to charge vehicles much faster—typically 100+ miles of range in 20–30 minutes—depending on vehicle capacity and station power output.

What are the benefits of Level 3 DC Fast Charging over Level 2?

Level 3 DC Fast Charging delivers much higher power—typically 50–400 kW—allowing most EVs to add 100–200 miles of range in about 20–30 minutes. Level 2 charging provides 3–19 kW and usually takes several hours to deliver a similar amount of range. DC Fast Charging is ideal for quick stops and long-distance travel, while Level 2 is better suited for workplaces, multifamily properties and overnight charging.

How do I choose the right fast charger for my electric vehicle?

To choose the right fast charger, start by ensuring it matches your EV’s connector type (NACS, CCS, or CHAdeMO). Then check your vehicle’s maximum DC Fast Charging rate, since your car—not the charger—determines how quickly it can charge. You can also compare station features such as reliability, pricing, speed availability (50–350 kW) and network coverage to find the most convenient option for your travel needs.

What are the main differences between J1772 and CCS charging connectors?

The J1772 connector is used for Level 1 and Level 2 charging and is found on almost all non-Tesla EVs in North America. It’s the plug you’ll use for everyday charging at home or at most public Level 2 stations.

CCS (Combined Charging System) includes the same J1772 pins plus two additional ones that allow for DC Fast Charging. If your EV has a CCS port, you can use both Level 2 J1772 chargers and DC Fast Chargers.

Can I use an adapter to connect different types of EV chargers?

Yes, you can use an adapter in many situations, but it depends on your vehicle and the type of charging. For Level 2 charging, adapters such as J1772 → Tesla or Tesla → J1772 are commonly used and generally safe when they are certified.

For DC Fast Charging, adapters are more limited and must be approved by your vehicle manufacturer. Always check your EV’s manual or manufacturer website, and avoid non-certified adapters—they may be unsafe or damage your vehicle.

What is a CHAdeMO charger?

CHAdeMO is a DC Fast Charging standard developed in Japan for battery electric vehicles, offering up to 400 kW power with a round connector, primarily used by models like Nissan Leaf and supporting vehicle-to-grid capabilities. Most new electric vehicles no longer use the CHAdeMO plug, as it’s being phased out in favor of the CCS and NACS standards.

However, many existing charging stations maintain the CHAdeMO connector for these legacy vehicles, and EV Connect’s charging solutions can integrate CHAdeMO-compatible stations into our management platform, providing seamless operation and real-time data for diverse EV ecosystems.

EV Connect offers 24/7 driver support. For assistance, you can either reach out through the app or call (866) 816-7584.

Is there a fee associated with using EV Connect charging stations?

Charging fees are determined by the station owner or property manager—not EV Connect. Pricing details are shown in the EV Connect mobile app before you begin your charging session.

Can I charge my Tesla vehicle at EV Connect managed charging stations?

Yes. Most EV Connect stations use the J1772 connector, which is compatible with Tesla vehicles using the appropriate adapter. Many DC Fast Chargers also include a CCS connector that works with the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter.

Does EV Connect support GM Plug and Charge?

Yes, just link your EV Connect and GM accounts—then activate Plug and Charge in the GM app. Plug in at supported stations and your sessions start automatically.

What types of chargers does EV Connect support?

Are there any free EV charging stations in my area?

Many businesses and public locations offer free EV charging as an amenity. You can find them by using the EV Connect app or other public charging apps and filtering for “free” or “no cost.” Availability varies by region, but free stations are commonly found at shopping centers, hotels, workplaces, universities and municipal buildings.

Roaming & Interoperability
What is roaming and network interoperability?

Roaming allows EV drivers to use charging stations across different networks with one account. Through roaming partnerships, EV Connect users can access thousands of additional public chargers without creating multiple accounts.

What are roaming stations and how are they different?

Roaming stations are chargers on networks operated by our roaming partners. They’re integrated into the EV Connect app so you can locate, start and pay for sessions without switching apps or accounts.

Who controls the pricing on roaming stations?

Pricing for roaming stations is set by the station’s owner or the roaming partner that operates the network—not EV Connect. You’ll see the cost before starting a session in the app.

Are there additional fees if I charge on a roaming station?

EV Connect does not add fees beyond the price displayed in the app. However, some roaming partners’ networks may include nominal roaming or session fees—these are shown transparently before you begin charging.

How do I find available charging stations on a roaming partner’s network?

Open the EV Connect app and enable “Show Roaming Stations” in the filter options. Partner locations will appear alongside EV Connect stations on the map.

As an EV Connect customer, how do I activate a charging session at a partner roaming site?

Simply select the roaming station in the EV Connect app and tap “Start Charge.” You can pay with your existing EV Connect payment method—no need for additional apps.

Will my key fob card work at roaming stations?

No, RFID cards currently work only on the EV Connect Network. Use the app to initiate sessions at roaming locations.

How come the QR code scanner sometimes works and sometimes does not work when scanning roaming stations?

Not all roaming partners support QR-based activation. If scanning doesn’t work, locate the station in the EV Connect app and start your session directly from the map view.

Who do I contact if I need assistance with a roaming station?

If you can’t start a session or encounter an issue, first contact EV Connect’s driver support team through our app or by calling the number listed. If the station belongs to a roaming partner, we’ll coordinate with that network’s support staff to reach a resolution.

Is my personal data shared between roaming networks?

Only essential session data—such as transaction details, start/stop times and usage metrics—is shared securely to enable interoperability and billing. EV Connect does not share your personal information or payment data.

Reservations
Can I have more than one reservation at a time?

No. To ensure fair access for all drivers, only one active reservation is allowed per account.

I have a reservation penalty. How did that happen?

If you reserved a charger but didn’t start a session within the allotted time, a small penalty fee may apply. This helps keep chargers available for other drivers.

GM Plug and Charge
Does EV Connect support GM Plug and Charge?

Yes, just link your EV Connect and GM accounts—then activate Plug and Charge in the GM app. Plug in at supported stations and your sessions start automatically.

How do I use GM Plug and Charge with EV Connect?
